@DracoTarot Ah well. Times change and we need to change with them. There is always a bit of tit for tat: gamers may not always own the games anymore, but in return, they get easy access. Back then, if you cracked a CD with the game, you could play it no more, but now, there is no physical copy that you can damage. And no need to go to the shop (indeed, if a pandemic happened during the time when you needed to go to the shop to buy games, I imagine it'd not have such an effect on the gaming industry as it did).

But while times may have changed, I fear that standards for what a game should be like (and if, indeed, it should be ready at all) when it is released may have become murky. Why, I wonder. I mean, it doesn't happen with hardware, when you buy a laptop or a monitor, the manufacturer does not tell you "Here is your device, it is almost working, we'll just send you a few screws in a week after you get it, and a microchip 6 months after that"

@DoctorEldritch I always made copies of my original games on CD and DVD for the exact reason if one of the originals broke.

That's why I have a space issue on my pc en external drives. 🤣

You would be surprised. Certain hardware does fall in the same category. Take for example Windows 11 upgrades. Two years back companies released motherboards with no security Chip features and a bios chip that needed to be flashed before Windows could run on the pc.

They intentionally left out these features to encourage people to buy the chips to upgrade. It was a bit of a low blow.

I even seen it in certain printers and scanning devices.

    @DracoTarot I thought they were copy-protected?

Wait, do you need to keep everything on your PC? Like with EGS, you can buy or get a game for free, but not install it and spend space on your PC right away. Only install it when you actually want to play it.

Oh my. Well then, I stand corrected, but I could still argue that with hardware, it may not be nearly as widespread as it is with games.

@DoctorEldritch There's always a way around it. I don't know if you remember a program called Alcohol 120 for way back. Is used it often. There's a whole lot of others on the market. 🙂

I don't have to install right away but I already have lots installed. I do not mind installing some again depending in the game or program but some have too many data and don't want to delete them all.

Not as widespread thank goodness. I would be a mess if hardware manufacturers would force people to do that.

I'll need to rewatch the movie before I can answer that. I watched it when it came out, but it's been a few decades now 😅

@DracoTarot I was just trying to be extra careful with my CDs, I was not savvy enough for anything like that back then.

It is a common thing for me: I am trying to limit the amount of games I have installed at any one time, to around 4, and not of the same genre, either. But I always end up with about twice that amount 😅

Indeed, let's hope that it will not come to this anytime soon.

@DoctorEldritch I had backups after backups especially my music CD's 🙂.

It's a struggle. The issue is there's so many new releases and interesting games. Not to go as far to install them all is hard. 😅

It would be really stupid if ot did.

In other news have you seen there's a age restriction in the UK for gamers who wants to install NVDIA drives. If you're not over eighteen you are unable to update your drivers. A bit bizarre really. 😶

@DracoTarot Even your backups have backups 😉

True. I find that making a list helps. I am quite good at holding myself back from new releases, seeing as how I like to wait for all DLCs (Come on, Atomic Heart...), so for me, it is mainly small indie games that clutter my drive. I suppose big new releases may be less of a problem: they are too big to have many of them at once. Small indie games, on the other hand, can come in hordes quickly 😅

I have not seen that, thank you for sharing. Do you need to be over 18 to buy it, too?

@DoctorEldritch Yea! My backups do have backups. Mostly important stuff like my music. The reason being is I had two drives full of music which broke a week apart. At least I had another drive with all the backups on it.

Same here. I think most of my games are small installs and Indie. My PC can't handle big titles anymore and I have to live with it for a while. It's still hard to skip those mega titles. 🙂

It seems you need to be 18 and older to accept the terms and conditions with some sort of verification. I guess buying it applies to the same rule. Apparently it's only in the UK and nowhere else.
