Hey, i have a legion 5 pro rayzen 7 5800h, rtx 3060 and 16gb ram when i unplugg the laptop i get a very low performance on games for example i was playing elden ring with stable 60fps when i unplugged it drop down to 15 to 20 fps in the other hand my friends alinware kept the stable 60fps after the unplugg with same graphics settings,

Noticeed that my gpu was not pulling enough watts to keep the performance but hus laptop did i don't remember the exact number but i think my laptop was pulling 30ish watts or something like that

I would really appreciate the help if anyone got any advices, Thnx!

You really shouldn't game on battery. It's common for laptops to reduce the power usage and thus performance when on battery, because otherwise the battery drains very quickly.

Maybe you have the low power mode on ( idk if it's the same name on legion laptops) when it not charging?

@LadyVarda there is something like that but doesn't change that much it is called performance profile or something like that but on battery the only power options available are silent and balanced the most powerful performance is not available

Your Legion 5 Pro is behaving normally for its power configuration, while your friend's Alienware is likely configured differently, possibly with a larger battery or a less restrictive power plan by default.

The key issue is that a laptop's battery simply can't provide the same sustained power to the components as the AC adapter can.

Why Your Laptop Behaves This Way

When plugged in, your laptop uses the AC adapter to deliver a high, consistent wattage to the CPU and GPU. Your Legion 5 Pro's RTX 3060 can pull up to 130W of power when connected to the charger, which allows it to run at its maximum performance.

When you unplug it, the laptop switches to battery power. To prevent rapid battery drain and potential damage, the system's firmware and software automatically throttle the power delivery to the components.

Your observation that the GPU was only pulling around 30W is spot on. This is a deliberate power-saving measure. The battery's output is not powerful enough to supply the 100W+ needed for a full-power gaming session, and attempting to do so would drain the battery in minutes while also generating a lot of heat.

How to Improve Performance on Battery

While you won't be able to achieve the same performance as when plugged in, you can adjust some settings to get better results.

    1. NVIDIA Control Panel: Open the NVIDIA Control Panel. Under "Manage 3D settings," find the "Power management mode" option and set it to "Prefer maximum performance" for the games you want to play. This will prioritize performance over battery life. 🎮

    2. Windows Power Plan: Click the battery icon in your taskbar. Move the slider to the "Best performance" setting. This will tell Windows to use a less aggressive power-saving mode.

    3. Lenovo Vantage: Open the Lenovo Vantage app. Go to the "Power" or "Performance" section. Ensure your power mode is set to "Performance Mode" or "Balanced," not "Quiet Mode" or "Battery Saver."

The app also has an "Advanced Settings" option where you can adjust CPU power limits for both plugged and unplugged states.

    4. Disable "Battery Boost" in GeForce Experience: Open GeForce Experience. Click the gear icon in the top right, go to the "Battery Boost" section, and turn it off or adjust the frame rate cap. By default, it can cap your FPS to as low as 30 to save power.
