You are probably aware that Steam publishes a monthly survey of the hardware and software used by its participating users.

    As Steam describes:

Steam conducts a monthly survey to collect data about what kinds of computer hardware and software our customers are using. Participation in the survey is optional, and anonymous. The information gathered is incredibly helpful to us as we make decisions about what kinds of technology investments to make and products to offer.

Here is the result of this survey for the 3 combined OS (Windows, Linux and macOS):

A typical configuration is taking shape before our eyes containing a CPU with 6 cores, clocked between 2.3 and 2.69 GHz with 16 GB of RAM as well as a GeForce GTX 1650 of... 8 GB of VRAM (that does not exist of course, it's a mix of the different trends) and more than 1 TB of storage. The most used resolution with 65.06% adoption is of course 1080p (1920 x 1080), as for those who use multiple monitors, the majority have the following resolution 3840 x 1080 (which means 2x 1080p monitors) and those who use VR headsets are 41.12% to prefer the Oculus Quest 2. Finally, the leading OS is unsurprisingly Windows 10 64-bit with 65.60% adoption (followed by Windows 11 64-bit with 27.98%).

What do you think of this "typical configuration"? Do you appreciate this kind of surveys? Tell us everything 😉

The average VRAM is a bit higher than I expected, I guess the older cards with lower numbers are getting phased out by the new ones with very large VRAM quantities.

My laptop 3070 is feeling self-conscious now, because it only has 8 GB. 😅

The rest of the survey results doesn't come as a surprise to me, the 6 core AMD CPUs have been extremely popular since the first generation Ryzen and then Intel introduced similar ones with Coffe Lake not long after that. And that was 5 years ago already. Time sure flies.
