Since Elon Musk acquired Twitter and walked in to the headquarters holding a sink in his hands, yelling "LET THAT SINK IN", we've been getting used to his controversial actions and tweets.

This weekend Elon Musk in a barrage of tweets admitted that the advertisers have not been returning to the platform as expected after messy takeover. He expressed his desire to change the direction of Twitter by replacing the well-known bird logo with an X. He justified it by his fascination with the letter X.

Twitter's official profile now displays a white X on black background. The company has also been renamed to X Corp prior to this declaration. Allegedly Elon Musk said "And soon we shall bid adieu to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds".

For me personally this means the end of the Twitter I wanted to use. I know people who already uninstalled the application over this.

Not even a year has passed since Elon Musk bought Twitter and he is already close to destroying one of the most important social networks in recent decades.

I really don't understand how Mr. Musk can make such bad decisions unless he's doing it on purpose.

@Inyeon Exactly, Twitter as a company/platform already lost a lot of credibility, the exodus of advertisers is one of the things proving that.

Over time there will be something else coming up to fill the void, but for now people are losing a huge platform for news sharing and marketing/advertising.

For example when the Russian invasion started I was following war journalists on Twitter, because they had the news that wasn't published anywhere else. But since the takeover, they stopped being visible. There were some leaks of the code showing that Elon's team was deliberately tweaking the algorithms to demote certain content and promote stuff that was more aligned with his line of thinking.

Advertisers, from all respectable companies, don't want to be involved in politics. If there's suspicion that the owner of the platform does things to promote certain parties and affect specific events, then they want out, as they don't want to be associated with that. Risk of losing customers and reputation from either side of the political spectrum.

@Saka I never used Twitter myself (you'll be amazed to learn, I'm sure 😉), so it is hard for me to comment from the user perspective. But I think X is symbolic, RIP Twitter and all...

Something always fills the void, though I think that this is more or less natural for the market. Twitter and FB had their moment, but nowadays it is more about Discord and Reddit. Out of the old players only YT aged more or less gracefully (food of adverts notwithstanding), I think.

But Elon has been making more odd decisions lately, it seems. Maybe the stress is getting to him, so I am on board with @DracoTarot notion of him going toe to toe with Zuckerberg. Work through that tension. 😅

What I find interesting bout Elon PR team is they always try and put a positive spin on whatever happens. I remember watching the feed of one of his latest launches when the rocket blew up soon after take off, and the commenters said "Well, we were only really after the launch data, all the extra flight time was just a bonus". While positive, this stance seemed a bit odd to me. And now, I can't help but think they have the same logic: "Well, we were only really after the takeover data, all the extra Twitter operating time after that was just a bonus".

@DoctorEldritch Reddit is also in trouble right now and the CEO is only adding fuel to the fire rather than trying to extinguish the conflict. While on the surface not that much changed, moderation is already in a worse spot after many prominent moderators left the platform, the third party tools for moderation are dead and the official Reddit app is not helpful for moderating in bulk. Some subreddits are also permanently altered in sign of protest.

About Elon's PR... It would seem that indeed Twitter is going through rapid unscheduled disassembly event.

@DoctorEldritch I remembered I saw something amusing during my lunch. Apparently Elon banned the Twitter profile of a porn site that was named XVideos or something like that. He wants X-videos to refer to his platform's videos, something like "Youtube Shorts" perhaps.

So right now the profile says that it is banned for violation of the rules, but I wonder what rule they broke if their only mistake was having the name Elon wanted. 🤔

But I am not a customer/viewer of such places so that's all second hand information.

    @Saka Oh my, that's...huh...well...

I want to say Elon might have noticed that little detail a bit too late. Next thing you know he will try to ban the word X-Rated, and I can see him going after the creators of the X-Files series and trying to buy the trademark rights off of them. Marvel's X-Men seem to be in danger, as well. and pirates everywhere because they put X on treasure maps...
