Hemos dejado para el final el capítulo más relevante, alrededor del cual gira toda la serie, nuestra tarjeta gráfica desktop.
Llegados a éste punto tendríamos que valorar cuánto pretendemos mejorar el rendimiento de nuestra Legion GO, portátil, mini PC o cualquier otro equipo con puerto Thunderbolt 4. Personalmente no tendría en cuenta nada por debajo de una RTX 4060, con la intención de que dure un tiempo; ni nada por encima de una RTX 4070Ti Super, para no saturar el ancho de banda disponible.
Hay un par de cuestiones a tener en cuenta con el uso de una eGPU, para maximizar el ancho útil del protocolo Thunderbolt 4 es imperativo utilizar alguna de las salidas de vídeo de la propia tarjeta gráfica, así evitamos que la información tenga que viajar ida y vuelta por el cable USB C; muchas reviews realizadas cometen éste gran error que reduce el potencial del puerto al 50%. Otra cuestión es un poco contraintuitiva, pero resulta que cuanto más le exijamos a la gráfica, menos se verá afectada por la limitación de ancho de banda del puerto e incluso será menos importante el desempeño de la CPU. Aunque parezca ilógico, se entiende perfectamente si nos damos cuenta de que cuanto más le cueste a la GPU procesar un fotograma, requerirá de menos velocidad de 'información de fotogramas entrante'. (Una explicación un tanto burda pero clara 😄)
Si tu objetivo con una eGPU es batir records de FPS, rompiendo la barrera de los 400 a 1080p, ni lo intentes. Con una eGPU es objetivo es poder jugar a mayor resolución y con mejores ajustes de calidad que con la gráfica integrada de tu dispositivo. Según el juego y el modelo de gráfica elegido, sería posible superar los 60 / 120 FPS a 1440p e incluso 4k.

Quizá uno de los primeros filtros pueda ser Nvidia o AMD. AMD suele disponer de mayor cantidad de VRAM pero un rendimiento claramente inferior en trazado de rayos a igualdad de gama. Nvidia, por su parte, reina con el trazado de rayos y las últimas versiones de su DLSS. La última palabra aquí es totalmente personal, en mi caso, quiero poder activar Ray Tracing con garantías y aprovechar el DLSS en aquellos juegos en los que esté implementado, así que tiraría por las RTX.
La cantidad de VRAM sería deseable que fuesen más de los 8GB que marcan el mínimo imprescindible hoy en día en una dedicada, pero si se desea ajustar el presupuesto podríamos llevarnos ésta estupenda RTX 4060:
A éste precio es imbatible y me cuesta mucho justificar el modelo de gráfica que yo elegiría para mi setup:
Son 350€ de diferencia para tener la que considero como la mejor tarjeta gráfica calidad / precio /rendimiento de la generación, tan sólo peca de no llegar a los 16GB que la convertirían en la gráfica ideal para combatir con la escasa optimización con la que salen cada vez mas juegos al mercado.
Si quisieras subir aún mas el listón, podrías llegar a los 900€ de una RTX 4070Ti Super, pero ya la relacion precio / prestaciones se desplomaría por completo.
La serie A de nvidia está dedicada al sector profesional, no sé exactamente con qué serie de optimizaciones cuentan a parte de mayor cantidad de VRAM que sus coetáneas, pero lo cierto es que a la hora de la verdad, es mayor el uso de las RTX convencionales. Para situarte un poco, esa que enlazas pertenece a la serie de las RTX 2000, prima de las 2070 ó 2080, dos generaciones por detrás de la RTX 4060
Ahhhh, ¡entiendo! Básicamente que para lo que nos atañe aquí, no se necesita tanta VRAM. Además que las que has enlazado son más modernas 👌

Del vídeo de Nate Gentile: se ve im-presionante el PC (aunque no soy fan del líquido mate), ahora empiezo a entender por qué hay tanta gente montando sus propios ordenadores, es un tema fascinante.
Diría que mi conclusión inmediata es que la líquida requiere bastante mantenimiento (y ser un/a manitas, la verdad), comparada con los ventiladores de toda la vida...(a parte del precio, claro está, no me ha dado por mirar precios, pero imagino que cuesta un pastizal montar algo así).
¿Merece la pena en cuanto a rendimiento y durabilidad del PC a más largo plazo?
Y hablando de montar, ¿cuál sería la opción más barata para montar un PC que se usara en exclusiva para montar server para juegos online? Pregunto por una amiga...

En palabras del mundo llano, pasivo es que no tiene ventiladores, tan sólo 'un cacho' de metal pegado y confía toda su capacidad de enfriamiento al contacto de su superficie con el flujo natural del aire. Para que un sistema completamente funcione necesita muchísima mas cantidad de metal, una temperatura ambiente bastante baja. Los ventiladores aumentan mucho el flujo de aire que pasa por los recovecos del metal del disipador por lo que requiere menos material para lograr bajar temperaturas. Una Líquida traslada esa energía calorífica a un radiador externo y allí estarían montados los ventiladores. El principio de funcionamiento viene siendo el mismo que el del radiador de cualquier vehículo de combustión, de hecho, es.probable que hayas visto el líquido verde o rosa tan habitual en las gasolineras.

Una Líquida custom como las de los vídeos son prohibitivas y hay que saber muy bien lo que se hace, imaginate la gracia de que haya una fuga de líquido con el PC en marcha 💥🔥💥. Pero para el procesador hay modelos mas económicos All In One y las placas base suelen venir preparadas para gestionarlas y todo:
Pero claro... para todo en esta vida hay un mercado ultra premium... con pantallita integrada y todo!
Lo cierto es que sí que ayudan mucho con la refrigeración. En un PC de torre convencional le pongo una líquida AIO al procesador si o también, no sólo reduce la temperatura de trabajo de la CPU sino que mejora mucho el flujo de aire dentro de la torre. Mejor refrigeración en general, te permite tomar dos caminos, aumentar la potencia/rendimiento o mantenerla y darle mas vida a los componentes.
Para GPUs también hay algunos modelos con AIO, pero se compran ya así montadas y no suelen ser baratas, ni fáciles de conseguir:

Eso ya es un mundo aparte. Muchas veces sale más a cuenta alquilar un servidor virtual a un proveedor (el propio Nate empezó así) Está claro que montándolo uno mismo puede gestionarlo y escalarlo todo de forma mas adhoc, pero también se come uno todo ataque, brecha de seguridad, etc...
En plan semi casero, un servidor no deja de ser un PC con una version de sistema operativo orientada a gestionar tráfico de red, almacenamiento, cómputo, etc. La gráfica es prácticamente irrelevante salvo si va a gestionar streaming/obs. En un servidor prima siempre, siempre la estabilidad, la eficiencia energética y minimizar la probabilidad de fallo. Nunca irse a modelos overclock de nada, ni topes de gama, ni últimos lanzamientos. Siempre ir por algo por encima de los requerimientos y en la medida que se pueda tener un plan B: A veces el plan B es... nos vamos a negro y ya 🤣😂🤣 todo dependerá de lo crítico que sea el servicio que se quiera alojar.
Por la misma razón de minimizar la probabilidad de fallo, los servidores se suelen montar en salas climatizadas y la refrigeración del server en sí es lo más convencional posible.
Ahora... para alojar un Minecraft, Palworld o similares, me atrevería a decir que la misma Legion GO serviría 😜 Sería buscar un PC que consuma poco, se caliente poco y haga poco ruido. Puede ser que esa sea la segunda vida de cierta handheld cuando llegue su jubilación: Nube personal, gestión local de domótica y puede ser que hasta VPN familiar (no me miren así Netflix y compañía...)

De la idea del servidor me llama precisamente la atención el darle una segunda vida a un aparato ya en desuso (en mi familia siempre hemos sido muy DIY, sobre todo mi padre, que tiene el garaje a rebosar de cacharros "por si acaso algo me sirve"). Y si claro, sería para montar un server familiar para Palworld (ya que en el portátil del trabajo no puedo hacerlo).
Hace muchos años, en una galaxia muy muy lejana: cuando me interesé por Linux y la programación (si @mcgnoll en su tiempo tuve todas mis máquinas con linux puesto, aunque era una absoluta patata y tuve que volver al SO del amigo puertas), estuve mirando los Raspberry pi como opción super barata para aprender a "montar odernadores"... ahí se quedó mi fantasía, como ya te comenté.
Así que cuando me jubile lo mismo puedo convertirme en la aburla hacker que siempre quise ser.
Y de ser así, seguiré tu recomendación sobre las líquidas AOI (no creo que me de tiempo en esta vida a aprender a doblar tubos de acrílico y que no haya fuga, jejeje)
Por cierto, lo de la pantallita, ¿para qué es? ¿mostrar los grados?

Upon termination, all licenses and other rights granted to you in these Terms will immediately cease. Following termination, Lenovo may retain your Content as permitted by applicable law for backup, archival, or audit purposes. Furthermore, Lenovo and its other users may retain and continue to use, store, display, reproduce, modify, create derivative works of, perform, and distribute any of your Content that other users have stored or shared through the Platform.
Indemnification

Limitations of Liability
Neither Lenovo nor its affiliates, officers, directors, employees, agents, third party content providers, sponsors, or licensors warrant that the Site will be continuous, uninterrupted or error-free.
