Probably because they´re very protective of his legacy (as it should be), so maybe there are some obscure license issues? (just speculating here). And as soon as her daughter passes...that´s it. Discworld Marvel XD
Ps, I do agree with your statement and I´ll extend it to all of those horrible adaptations that butcher the source material XD

@CandelaSynth Who knows, Discworld is so monumental that they can afford to say no to things until they are sure that whatever project is proposed is good enough, especially after they were burned with The Watch. I am in favour of not getting anything as opposed to getting something mediocre.

@DoctorEldritch Hmm, I'm surprised the page count for these books isn't too high. Gives me hope that I'll be able to reach Reaper Man soon🤞

Yep, Stormlight Archive is fantasy! A great one at that. Like Warhammer, it has Henry Cavill's seal of approval😄

We read Crime and Punishment, The Lower Depths, Dead Souls, and others.
Better to expose kids to the realities of life early in life eh😅 I personally would've loved to be part of that education system no jk.

Acheron Hades, Third Most Wanted Man in the World, steals the original manuscript of Martin Chuzzlewit and kills a minor character, who then disappears from every volume of the novel ever printed!
Okay, now you’ve got my attention!

I have the good ol' Kindle Paperwhite. No Kindle Unlimited subscription, though 😅
@CandelaSynth Sold! I'll give this a shot after finishing The Colour of Magic. It sounds like Del Toro showed some restraint in his work then😅 In the OG Pinocchio, he murders Jiminy Cricket and gets hanged at the end 💀 If you're into creepy stuff, check out Peter Pan's unhinged behavior in the books😵

@ZaidH The books have a lot going on in them, but they are not that long a piece, true. Pratchett was a master of saying a lot by saying little, so I want to say it is a sign of mastery rather than a lack of content.

Too bad Stormlight Archive is still largely unfinished as a series. Seems to be a bit of a wait for it to wrap up...

Oh yeah, we got our shot of reality quite early. It was a decent system, but there are only so many lessons in a year, so we had to pay for that by being under-exposed to Western literature, we mostly covered the basics. And no Eastern literature at all, that is something I am sad about.

Thursday Next is a good example of lore and worldbuilding, I enjoy these books a lot. The style and vibe may not be for everyone, but give it a try, if you like them, then this is a gem of a series.

Ah, I see. I asked because I found a translation of a decent Russian series that is free on Kindle Unlimited. But with Paperwhite you may want to hold off, I am not sure how good the translation is, only that it exists.

@DoctorEldritch authors who don't waste their readers' time with unnecessary bloat have my eternal gratitude 🫡

Actually, Stormlight Archive Book Five (coming out this December) is supposed to conclude the current era of the story. It's also part of a universe called the 'Cosmere,' so even though the main story may stop for some time, the other narratives in this universe will probably keep us updated on the overall state of things.

I will definitely give Thursday's next series a shot at some point! Also, I'm seeing nothing but praise for The Astrobiologists! It's pretty cheap as well!

@ZaidH Sometimes authors spend more time setting the scenes and describing the surroundings, it is not necessarily a bad thing. Some rely more on the reader's imagination with only a few details, and those books are shorter. It is when authors artificially inflate the size of text (because of contracts or some other reason) with no substance to the text when it becomes an issue.

I may give Stormlight Archive a try. High fantasy is not really my thing though, I am more of a Witcher-type fantasy reader when it is not humorous.

As*trobiologists! seems to be getting good reviews, yeah, which is encouraging. I'd still feel better advising it if I got a chance to read it in translation.

Agreed 100%. Every Stormlight book has over 600 pages, but the world and character building makes it so worth it. Speaking of the Stormlight Archive, while it’s not as grimdark as The Witcher or A Song of Ice and Fire books, it does fill that niche with its grounded portrayal of mental struggles amidst the epic storylines. If you're looking for a completed Brandon Sanderson series to dive into, Mistborn is another great starting point. It has incredible worldbuilding, an amazing magic system, and edges towards borderline grimdark.

@ZaidH I'll add Stormlight to my list. It's just that it is a bit long as is... 😅 I am not too into grimdark and indeed, I'd say Witcher is not that exactly (Ice and Fire is, though), and generally go for lighter stuff (hence me being partial to humorous stories), but sometimes the mood calls for something like that.

Nice, hope you like it. The first couple of books may be a bit clanky to get through (taking into consideration that they are old and Terry Pratchett's first), but it gets better as it gets on and after Reaper Man the series shines brightest. Let me know how you find it!

@DoctorEldritch Oh, my bad! 😅 I had the impression the Witcher games were so bleak and brutal that I assumed the books leaned heavily into grimdark.

I’m loving the humor in CoM so far! It's so well-written. The only challenge is that the world (galaxy?) structure and the character names are a bit disorienting, but I guess that's to be expected early on 😁

@ZaidH Really? I thought they were on the lighter side, actually. Certainly did not leave me feeling hopeless. Goes to show how things like that depend on perception and personal taste.

That is to say, I'd agree that Witcher games are somewhat grimdark, but one could argue that the whole period of Middle Ages in actual history is somewhat dark (hence Dark Ages), so what happens in Witcher is actually normal for that period, just with monsters and magic and all. There are darker games and stories.

Glad you're enjoying it! Yeah, there is a bit of a leaning curve for lore, I had that too, but you would indeed get used to it soon enough, I think.
