When it comes to horror, do you like watching or playing?

    Hello Legion Gamers!

Earlier this week we talked about spooky programs or channels. And there are obviously spooky games in abundance. Which brings us to the question: is it scarier and/or more enjoyable to watch something spooky or play something spooky?

Personally, I do not enjoy being frightened at all, so I do not really watch scary films or play scary games, and the SCP Foundation I mentioned earlier is more spooky and cryptic than scary.

But then it comes to scarier things, it is about the immersion for me: when you are watching something, you are detached from the story as an observer looking in and you are safe, while when you are playing the game, you are "part" of the process and it may be more personal. For me, it is not a good thing, horror games are scarier for me than films.

But that's me. What about those of us who enjoy the horror genre, do you like films or games better? @DracoTarot I remember you not minding horror films as much as I do, any insight to share?

@DoctorEldritch Oh dear! Another thread you've mentioned me in but no notification.

Well, it's my favourite season of the year and like usual I will be watching some of my favourite movies and series. A few new horror movies are being released this week and next week.

One I'm waiting for is the new Nosferatu but I see the movie will only be released in December.

I do not really have a specific horror game I want to play. Maybe when I'm bored I will find an interesting-looking horror title online.

The most of October and Halloween it will be all about the movies.

@DracoTarot No worries, and I will look into it for you.

I am hoping that Nosferatu could be Bill Skarsgård's redemption after The Crow...

Maybe EGS will offer some spooky titles for free closer to Halloween. It would make sense for them to do it. If they are good enough, you can play some horrors for free then.

But nothing wrong with just enjoying horror films and ignore the games completely, too. Have you played any horror games lately?

@DoctorEldritch I promised a review after watching The Crow and I agree Bill needs redemption after the movie.

The new age Crow does not work. The first mistake made was to call Bill's character Eric Draven. His girlfriend did not fit the story at all and her acting was not really that great. Most of the other actors also failed in their roles.

Bill could've looked better in his role if they had taken more initiative with his makeup and outfits. The fighting scenes were ok but you can clearly see it's all generated and no effort was put into the FX.

The storyline sucked unfortunately and had so much potential. I don't know why people mentioned it's a remake of the original. I can't find any comparison whatsoever.

EGS will have some spooky titles. Shutter will also have tons of titles to watch.

I haven't played any Horror games lately. I lost interest and feel most of them are the same. Jump scares and the storyline doesn't differ from the others. Maybe there are great games out there I do not know of yet.

@DracoTarot You're right, most of the people (and not just actors by a long shot) involved in that movie will need some sort of redemption. Thankfully, Rockstar's on it! 😅

Hmm, I am really not the right person to ask about scary games, but from our talks with @j7schultz I gathered that Dead Space is quite good in that sense. And cult classic Silent Hill 2 just got remade 2 days ago, too. So if you do end up wanting to try them at some point, maybe go for one of those?

@DracoTarot Oh, and Nosferatu just released another trailer:

@DoctorEldritch My opinion is to leave the Crow alone and never touch the movie again. The damage has been done. Just let it be LOL! Even if Rockstar goes ahead with their plans, the original will still be the best.

Dead Space and Silent Hill are fun to play and the storylines are written well. Go ahead and try them out.

I won't say they are scary as such but do have a lot of jump scares. My favourite will always be Outlast.

@DoctorEldritch I've seen both trailers. Usually, I try not to because I do not like spoilers. Can't wait for the release.

Tonight I'm going to watch the new Beetlejuice.

If you are in search of a great series to watch, I recommend Mr Inbetween. It's an Australian production.

I can't post the YouTube link here. Go have a look and see if it's worth your while.

@DracoTarot I meant it in a way that Rockstar is releasing Red Dead Redemption 1 for PC 😅

I wanted to, @j7schultz and @GoLLuM13 and I were talking about it some time ago, but, firstly, I am too cowardly for jumpscares. I prefer a more mystical side of horror where the atmosphere is thick as tar and maddening wyrd seeps into everything. More traditional jumpscares or slashers are a bit out of the gate for me. and secondly, my backlog is so big as it is, if I get to these games, it won't be too soon...

Ah, yeah, I need to watch Beetlejuice too, it's high on my list.

I have not heard about Mr Inbetween actually, thank you for the tip! Is it completed? I looked into it and the last season was back in 2021, so I am not sure if it was properly concluded or dropped on the wave of pandemic?
