Do Ys games need to be played in succession?

    Hello Legion Gamers!

A small question from yours truly: Ys X: Nordics came out at the end of last month and fought my attention as something I could try to play. But my excitement was short-lived as a quick search in Wikipedia revealed that this series is an institution dating from before I was even born, and each new instalment still has the same main character (and a few recurring ones).

Hence my current dilemma: can you play Ys X: Nordics without having played the rest or better not? This is my recurring problem with such games, but while I managed to resolve the Tales series conundrum and am still to find a solution for the Final Fantasy series, Ys is a new one.

So I wanted to ask if anyone knows or played those games before or knows the lore, can you play it standalone or at least a few previous ones need to be tackled so as not to miss anything?

@GoLLuM13, we may have touched on this series in passing sometime before? Or my memory may be playing tricks on me 😅

Never played the Ys games, but I know they have been mentioned here in the past (probably for the release of one of them ? 🤔)

New franchise to me as well, would think that you can more or less just hop on it. Tho never really liked getting in on later parts in a game series at least if it's heavy on story.

@GoLLuM13 Memory is playing tricks on me then. This is an odd one to try to remember, I can't quite put my finger on when I've seen a talk about it. Might have been the last game, as you said, but the last one was Ys IX: Monstrum Nox and it was released in 2019, Legion Community was not even around back then. Maybe it was given out for free or something...

@miskkie That's exactly it, I have no idea how heavy on the story it is. I could not play all the games back from 1987 till now, even if I only focus on those that were ported for PC, it'd still be quite a lot. I may be tempted to at some point, but I do not have that amount of time right now.

Never really liked getting in on later parts in a game series either. I played all Yakuza games from the start, and all Assassin's Creed games from the start too. I like JRPGs, I think they tend to be better thought-through than modern Western RPGs, but many of them are long series. For this reason, I prefer those that are individual stories like Tales of Persona. Still need to tackle FF. And am trying to understand if Metal Gear is something I could get into.

Ironic how JRPGs are good but can be so much hassle...
