Choosing a Computer for gaming

How do you choose the specs a pc needs to play games ?

  • It's a balance of what you want vs what you need and what you can afford.

What resolution are you wanting to play? Little point in a 4090 to play fortnite at 1080. Not saying you can't but you could get a 4070 machine at half the cost andnget more than adequate framerates and graphics settings.

Similarly CPU choice can come down to professional workloads too. A 7800X3D is king for gaming alone and is very efficient. But if you do a lot of CPU heavy tasks a 7950X or 13900K could be a better option.

Jarrods laptop reviews covers a lot of laptops with gaming and professional workloads so you can get an idea of what to expect. A lot of tech reviewers can give ball park figures for desktops too. Then you have to see what you can afford.

  • First and foremost, you should decide what kind of games do you want to play, at what resolution & refresh rate and at what level of details. Then you spec your new gaming rig accordingly.

  • start with a budget of what you want to spend.

  • I start with the budget and then move backwards from most to least important. And to be able to make a proper decision I look up the best performance-price ratios for the various components.
