“Get Got by a Gran” wins a Shorty for the Community

Last year, the Legion Gaming Community launched the “Get Got By a Gran” challenge, bringing seniors into the gaming arena, training them up and having them duke it out against some young whipper-snappers.

We’re pumped to announce that the initiative won a coveted Shorty Award in the “Technology” category for online events/activations AND a “gold distinction” for live streaming video. That’s on top of all the pretty words from the likes of the Wall Street JournalCNN and The Gamer that we received at the time.

Of course, it’s super flattering to win the award and all that positive press earned some nice points for the marketing department, but it’s not about us.

It’s about the seniors. It’s about all of you. All of you who join us here, there and everywhere with a common passion for gaming and the never-ending quest to build camaraderie and find friendship wherever and with whomever you share a connection.

In case you missed it, here’s how we even got to the idea of “Get Got By a Gran.”

First, it’s important to understand that senior loneliness is especially more than a sad reality. It's a medical minefield, increasing the likelihood of dementia, heart disease and stroke. In 2019, a staggering 1 in 3 seniors reported feeling lonely. The very next year, in the midst of a global pandemic, senior loneliness became an even bigger problem.

E-sports was always the obvious solution…Yes, of course, e-sports!

The Lenovo Legion squad recruited seniors in lockdown, trained them up in E-sports and dared young gamers across the globe to battle it out with them on Senior Citizen’s Day. We streamed the whole thing live on the Lenovo Legion Twitch, bringing two unlikely communities together to combat each other and loneliness.

The results? It was their day. We all should have known better.

LOOK AT THAT EVIL LAUGH.

Not purposely trying to use a word from our marketing materials, but the reaction here is absolutely SAVAGE.

And not to call him out (but, yes, totally to call him out), our very own North America Legion Community Manager Ben Green joined the fracas and also got his lunch handed to him. (The below is Ben’s “stunned” face.)

Thank you to all the seniors who joined us that day. Thank you to all of you that have made this place a special community for gamers of all ages, young and old. Here’s to the many years ahead on the virtual battlefield together.

Are you senior or know a senior who wants to get into gaming? Let us know in the comments any questions you have! Or join us on Twitch for a live stream session (or a friendly bout). Just promise you’ll take it easy on us this time.
