Today is National Intern Day!
We thought there was no better way to celebrate than to introduce you to Kelie S, our intern for the summer. Check out her interview below and feel free to drop additional questions for Kelie in the comments!
Welcome! Can you do a quick introduction for readers? (Name, Role,)
Hello! My name is Kelie, or more commonly known otherwise as SummerPlasma, and I’ve been working as a Global Community Intern since the end of May this year. I’ve been tasked with picking up some extra duties while Ben is away like the posting of articles, giveaways and to be a great point of contact for the community. You may have seen me in the Discord server or during Twitch streams which is what I’ve volunteered during my free time prior to being an intern.
How long have you been active in the community?
I’ve been active since I even learned about it. If it wasn’t for the recommendation from my dad to try out Lenovo to replace my previous laptop that wasn’t doing itself justice when I was in college, I don’t think I would be here. I joined the community June of 2020 and primarily helped with basic tech support questions from members of the Discord. Later, I was recognized by Ben and asked to be a moderator across all fronts. I’ve gotten to learn so many things relating to moderation and fostering a wonderful community that I’m happy to be able to do the same and more in the position I’m in today.
What was your favorite thing you’ve gotten to do at Lenovo?
I enjoy everything I do even if they may be tedious for some. I know that can kind of seem like a cheap answer, but I genuinely do like working behind the scenes doing whatever I’m able to either provide directly or think of the future. If I had to pick one, I enjoy posting articles and seeing the responses to them in the comments. Allowing others to share the same joy as we do and have a place to express that is something I find to be great.
What did you find the most challenging?
I am crippled with the curse of being a perfectionist and sometimes learning new things for me can be difficult. I have helped to mend some of these issues with taking as many notes as possible and remembering that everything new must be learned some way and in the way that works for you. I am grateful for everyone I’ve worked with being understanding and even taking the time to go over a concept a second time to reassure my memory. I feel as though it’s something I’ll always struggle with but having a proper support system definitely goes a long way.
Do you have any advice for people seeking Lenovo internships?
You don’t need to know everything about everything; however, I recommend being passionate about what you want to try for as that will give you a much larger leg up than plainly listing off your skills. Passion and skill work hand in hand. Enjoying the opportunity and what you may already know and do is also important. Do not apply to be an intern for graphic design if your real passion or niche is for sales. If you don’t know what field or work is best for you, there are tons of quizzes online to help guide you in the right direction. Everyone has that little spark in them, use it to your advantage.
Fun Questions! (enough about all the boring stuff!)
Favorite game of all time?
This question is incredibly tough for me to answer as I’ve grown up playing most of the games in the Need for Speed series and love almost all the ones I’ve gotten to play. If I had to pick one game out of that series though, it would have to be Most Wanted 2005. I remember waking up early before middle school so I could have a chance to play each morning, sometimes running late, sometimes getting to play even more if we had school cancelled due to snow. I don’t remember another game that had me going crazy lengths just to get a little bit more time each day to enjoy it. I haven’t finished it yet but I’m hoping to pick it up again soon and try again.
First real game you ever played?
I don’t remember the absolute first game I’ve ever played but I remember my first exposure to gaming was through Tomb Raider, Spyro, and Need for Speed on both the PS1 and 2.
Games you’re playing the most right now, when you have time?
This changes very often. I just picked up a Meta Quest 2 and have been using it nearly every day mostly playing VRChat. Otherwise, it’s usually American Truck Simulator, House Flipper or The Crew 2. My interests rotate a lot, so this is bound to change fairly soon.
What’s the last good TV or Movie you watched?
I rarely ever sit down and watch a movie or a TV show unless I have absolutely nothing else to do. I did go out with some friends to see the new Spiderverse movie which was incredible. I haven’t been to a theater in years and that movie was an amazing intro into going back again.
