What are people's thoughts about 500W power supplies in gaming desktops?

I am helping a friend who wants to replace an 8 year old gaming laptop with a new desktop. I noticed that below a certain price/performance point Lenovo Legions have 500W power supplies and then they jump to 850W power supplies. I'm not sure she can afford the higher performance configurations, but 500W seems a bit low assuming the computer will be upgraded (GPU/memory/drives) over its lifetime (I suspect the goal is  to keep it 8 years). Have people that bought Legions with 500W power supplies been happy with the choice or have you had some buyers remorse with the relatively low wattage? Maybe the answer is just the first upgrade should be the power supply?
