@R1mpl0 Thank you for finding time to join in during this busy period! 😊

    How did exams go?

@DoctorEldritch Oh, it went well and I passed my exams so I will be graduating with a Bsc in Computer Science and Mathematics this month. 😎😎

@R1mpl0 Congratulations, very well done! 🎉 And fast to know the results, too. Back when I was a student, we had to wait about a month to learn how we scored. How long did you need to wait to know you passed?

BSc in Computer Science and Mathematics. Nice. What is next for you, Master's or maybe something else?

Thank you, @DoctorEldritch. I had to wait about 3 weeks or so, since all my exams were placed within the first week of the exam period.

    Currently, I have two options:
    • Start looking for work now. My aunt has said that some companies do have in-house bursaries, but I feel like that is only for big companies, which is unlikely for me.
    • Freelance and build projects until I can get funding for honours, then masters, since my parents can't cover both my varsity fees and my middle brother's (he's doing a BEng in Computer Engineering, which is very expensive) at the same time.
I do feel that my future is uncertain since there are very few entry-level jobs these days, which is why I'm considering honours to make up for my lack of experience. I was even joking with a classmate of mine from last year, who finished with a distinction, about how it took him a whole year just to get an entry job.

    Any Tips or Advice?

@R1mpl0 Ah, 3 weeks is not too bad. Though speaking from experience of someone who has been on both sides of the fence, those 3 weeks are much harder on teachers than students. The sheer volume of exams to check, you do nothing and see nothing but exam papers for days. Ugh. That was one of my least favourite things when I was teaching 😅

It would not hurt to put your CV up for one of those free CV hosting sites, if nothing else, it will search for some job matches for you while you freelance. Throwing a wide net, who knows, something good could show up.

Also, I am not sure, but what is the internship situation? A paid internship would be perfect, but even an unpaid one would be a good experience to have, in addition to projects and freelancing.
@ZaidH you recently got a freelance gig (how is it going, by the way?), maybe you have any advice?

@DoctorEldritch 😭. I know what you talking about. I was also a lecture assistant this semester for an Applied Maths model called Numerical methods. I got the job since I was the only assistant very well versed with the MATLAB language. The marking was a lot. One time I had to mark 180 practical tests in 2 days. I was so burnt out for a while 😭.

Besides that, I did some paid internships at my dad's engineering firm but the role was more akin to Tech support then actually software development.

As for projects, I recently been busy with a python desktop app that helps my dad automate the processing of road data sets into information that he can understand and view graphically. The next step will be translating the app into an website that can be accessed anywhere.

@R1mpl0 Ayyyy huge congrats on the Bachelor’s degree 😁 Love seeing you already working on personal dev projects. If you can, get some uni mates involved in this python project of yours and collaborate together using Git/GitHub. An open source project that solves a real-world problem will really stand out in your portfolios.

In this field, work experience matters more than anything, at least that's the case where I live. While you’re building projects, keep pestering your university’s career department and ask your professors for recommendations. If you don’t have strong industry connections yet, make sure people know (your friends, relatives, neighbors, even the person at your local food spot, everyone!) you’re looking for work, even outside tech circles.

I learned this the hard way. Despite having ample web dev experience and applying relentlessly online, what finally landed me a role was word of mouth. So definitely focus on networking, it’s one of the few things that consistently works these days. The tech sector right now honestly makes me want to leave everything behind and live like a monk in the mountains 😆 I sincerely hope that very soon you’ll come back to this community and let us know that you’ve landed a new job. Wishing you all the best!

@ZaidH, I did a final year project. Would that be fine to add to my portfolio or is personal ones better? Was there any certification that are a plus to have these days?

As of now, most local businesses have closed for the holidays so hopefully I'll get a job next year but I'll definitely spread the news when I get a job.

It just hit that my life free trial is about to end. I better make the most of it I guess.😂😂

@R1mpl0 That depends on your university’s policies. For some universities, the capstone project actually belongs to the university, so showcasing it online might land you in hot water. Definitely check with your professors before adding it to your portfolio. That said, your current Python project sounds amazing, so your portfolio is already off to a great start. As for software development certifications, I'm not aware of any that will give you an advantage. Certs are immensely valuable when it comes to fields like Cybersecurity, Robotics etc., but for Software Development, work experience and projects always comes out on top.

    😂😂😂
With the current tech landscape and the global job market, we’re honestly very fortunate that we even got a free trial in the first place 😂

Yeah 🤣, checked the policy. It seems the university does own it. I think I will just reference it and say what I did. Hopefully it will be enough.

Full send into more projects it is then. Thanks @ZaidH
