Learn and started gaming on linux 6 years ago when microsoft announced plans to end win10 support. Ive learned alot and i wont be going back. Outside of a few cases, my Linux gaming experience has been rather smooth and painless. Theres alot of misinformation and preconceptions on linux and id love to dispel them and answer any questions i can.
What OS do you use?
Nobara Official (KDE). its an OS tailored specifically for Gaming. great hardware compatibility and performance. Its the distro i recommend for any beginner. Dont waste your time with Bazzite or SteamOS those are much better suited for handhelds
How is the performance?
In my experience its 1:1 with windows. i notice better performance with older games (i get 600fps on Dirt3 vs 320ish on windows). some people say its faster in certain games ive played, i dont notice it maybe a 10% up tic. The Games that dont perform well borderline dont run anyways. but games like monster hunter Wilds has pretty bad frame stutter (dips to around 83fps while i get around 100fps on win10). Its generally been good otherwise.
What games work on linux
Around 90% of the games on steam work. The only games ive ran into issues with are games with aggressive anti cheat (RUST, destiny 2,PUBG), kernel level anti cheat doesnt play well so games like LoL or Valorant is a No, or games that blacklist linux/steam deck (GTA online, apex) , not all games with anti cheat dont work ive been able to play games like The finals, tekken 8.
you can figure out which games work at protondb.com. they will say if the game runs and any fixes or settings to get it running well
Is Linux hard to use?
id say no. It can be hard but here is how you make it easy.
-Stay away from advanced distros like Arch linux. use distros like Nobara or Linux mint. These are great for browsing the web and playing games. the others are alot more niche
-you dont need to learn command line, but learning little things like how to update your OS from it will go along way in building your confidence. it can be as easy as "sudo dnf update"
-if you see a cmd command try to research and understand the command "Sudo" means "super user" similar to "run as administrator", "DNF" is your package manager" so you are calling your pkg manager with admin privileges and you are asking to update.
Whats the catch?
-If theres certain software you rely on or cant do without youre out of luck, linux doesnt need driver for anything but certain hardware or software needs drivers. stuff like Adobe products, AutoCAD, FL studio to name a few dont have linux versions. youd be surprised at all the software that does. look into this before switching. if you cant find or want to learn an alternative, i have to say DONT switch to linux. stay on windows or Run a dual boot. at the end of the day OS' are just tools, use the right tool for the job.
-hardware compatibility, most distros have amd and nvidia driver support built in. but certain hardware may not be compatible. for ex any elgato capture device doesnt work. you need the elgato drivers and they dont work on linux. theres alternatives like EVGA and averMedia but its something to keep in mind. will your steering wheel, VR headset work? look into it.
ive got tons of experiences and stories. if you have any questions i will answer them openly and honestly
Do you have any questions about linux gaming?
