Does Vram affect the performance of GPU for fps?

I know vram is a big topic in gpu community with nvidia not giving their graphic cards much compared to amd. My thing is even though AMD gpus are loaded with vram when i watch the gpu benchmark comparisons sometimes nvdia cards with like 6gb less vram perform better the the amd card that has more. What are you guys explanation for this?
