I've been aware of this for a long time, not all silicon can do the same things, but the 80/90 class of laptop SKUs are power starved.
I've chatted to some pretty technical people myself, Seanwee being one of them and a few others in the Legion space, the Legion Pro 7i gen 8/9 and even now 10 will respond favorably to increasing the power with shunts. Honestly, I have been temped to shunt my 4090 LP7i because with liquid metal on the die, the Legion's vapor chamber can handle that SKU at 225w easy. Add a cooler like the Flydigi BS2 and you're not going to throttle at all. I am capable of doing this, I just can't decide whether to pull the trigger on it.
These new GPUs cost a hell of a lot of money and they cost much like the desktop part, yet we are most certainly starved of power here. Nvidia sets these limits, not the OEM. If you watched the vid, you can see that the 5090 with a shunt and tune at 250w can easily match it's stock desktop 5080 counter part. That is worth the price Nvgreedia ask for the laptops. Most flagships, like the Legion Pro7i and a few others have the VRM capacity for this. I believe the LP7i has either 8 or 9 VRM phases for the GPU. That's between 240w and 270w capacity as most VRM phases when properly cooled can handle about 30w each.
What do people feel about this blatant robbery of performance and hamstringing of powerful products?
Lenovo... if you want me to shunt my 4090... just lose a 5090 LP7i/9i at my door and I'll shunt the 4090 and post before and afters 😛
EDIT: More food for thought. There actually used to be 200w GPUs too as well as SLI.

This cost as much as a modern flagship, with positively ANCIENT technology in comparison to what is available today. So people saying that you can't cool +200w in a laptop are very wrong. We're cooling more power in thinner lighter machines now. That and if a decent sized laptop like an LP7i is too heavy... ya need to hit the gym lol
